Swell is coming up, I had a great(ish) morning on the new 7' boards as there was alot more push to the waves than a few days ago. I had a really nice ride once I figured out that I can move up toward the front of the board. I am used to moving up to get going faster to beat the close out but with the shorter board I have been hesitant to move to the "real" front because it seems like I'll just topple off the front. I have been taking the last few days of small waves to get comfortable on the new board and it is starting to pay off. I just drink more salt water than I am used to on the 8' or 9'. I am so thankful to all you who pitched in, I love that board!
Treva's grandmother Irene is here right now for a quick long weekend visit and we got to play the game "Settlers of Catan" last night and after a daunting read through the instructions it was a pretty awesome board game. Usually I feel a bit forced into playing the games but I really enjoyed this one. I think the last crop of performance based games wore thin, at least to me. They are pretty social and fun under circumstances but they got a bit too clever for me. This game appeals to the d&d dork in me but it was also cool because there are many equalizers in the game so even though I was SURE I was going to win Astrid/Treva pulled it out. Until next time...
Yep, things are pretty awesome. How sick are you hearing me say that?
After reading about the ipad ALOT I think it could be a good laptop replacement for Astrid but the no flash thing wigs me out. I took a look at the video command in html 5 on just a few browsers and it seemed pretty inclusive to most? It will be awhile before it is ubiquitous but whatever...
Okay, that is all. Carry on...

mehh
Even here, even in relative perfection, you have mediocre days. Didn't surf, didn't do much creative, didn't like the iPad, didn't feel it today, you know? Met a woman who didn't want the scamp, didn't hear from a new client, didn't didn't didn't.
Okay, so the positives. We dropped off the puppy at a pretty nice shelter for adoption in pv. I made some pretty good sushi. I chatted with Steve and he told me about a new band or two. I got some good feedback on this postcard I am working on. Watched BSG with my adoring daughter. She loves that show, too funny. We got some christmas packages from our family- had some yummy candycanes in the car. Watched more of Dream of Life, loved it. Sam Shepherd was in her place playing guitar with her. She had said earlier in the movie that he had given her this 1930's guitar in 1975 and there he was playing guitar with her. Just so you know, I wrote my college thesis on some of the plays of Sam Shepherd and got him to read it. So there's THAT.
Saw my friend Daniel at school and talked to him a bit. He's an older Sayulitan, built his house with his son and it is incredible. All wood and this view that goes on forever. I think he and his wife lease the land and take care of the property for the owners- he said they were coming through so he had to make sure all was pretty and all good. I inferred that this was a little stressing, like whenever the owners are in town and you want things perfect. So here's this awesome guy, not sure how old but he's really together, and he's stressing this little thing. Goes to show that no matter where you are in life you always have the little things. Yeah, that is not nearly as profound as it could have been.
I'll put that sentence in the didn't category.

Music film kick
I have been watching alot of music related flicks of late. I just finished "Runnin' Down a Dream" about Tom Petty and just started "Dream of Life" about Patti Smith.
I really have a new found respect of Tom Petty, you should totally watch it if you have the chance. I was amazed at his cohesive songwriting. He sounds like himself, his songs do not age and they all sound of a family. I always assumed he was part of a pantheon of "big rock" but now realize that was not his gig. I always think that many of his songs could have come out any time, they are not easily pinned down to a time. As much as I love Bowie, he writes of an era, he is influenced by what is happening now. Tom Petty, as I have come to see, is not.
I am about 45 minutes into the Patti Smith movie and wow. I had to stop it to write this because it is just so overwhelming. Really amazing film making. Stark, stripped, raw and gorgeous. Thankful for all the things there are to discover for oneself, loving having time to dig into these things.

ahhh surfing
I have not been able to get out in the water for the past few days- it was super windblown and I had stuff that needed doing. I was getting real antsy but out of the blue I was talking to a buddy and he was ready to go! It was pretty damn big but glassy. Right as we got in the water two boatloads full of older long board turistas piled out but it was okay. I sucked today but still got on some honking huge ones and also spent some time in the wash-rinse-repeat cycle inside. My whole attitude was changed for the better, I'm sure my wife would agree. Made it over to a couple of friend's house who are visiting the pueblo and ate some yummy dinner. What a great day it ended up to be!!!

por mi amigo esteban.
I drink lunch most days. Unfortunately for me, not in the tradition of mad men. We bought a Magic Bullet in texas on the recommendation of someone. Can't remember who. I find it is awesome for shakes and smoothies of the single serving variety- it is easy to clean, easy to judge the right amounts of stuff you want to blend as opposed to bigger blenders. But as I am on a less not more kick (you'd be hard pressed to discern this from my apple tablet cravings) you can do this recipe with you reg'lar olde blender.
Almonds- about as many as you can hold in the palm of your hand.
Ginger syrup (cook water, sugar and ginger in a pan for awhile)- if you don't have just throw some damn ginger in there already. Good lord, people why you sweating me? You really want me to hibernate again on this here new blog? Is that what you WANT?????
Water or fruit juice- just enough to barely cover the almonds.
Blend this until the almonds are almost like peanut butter.
Add a Banana.
Add some frozen fruit. I like Mangos but the frozen mixed berries from Costco are good antioxidants.
Add some more water or fruit juice.
Blend until smooth.
I have found this totally levels out my post surf crash and keeps me going until I need some snack mid-afternoon. Be sure to drink a big glass of water with it! Hydrate, hydrate, okay! (for all you non-hippies that is a dr bronner label reference thrown in for good measure).

No title
There is a huge swell here right now- supposedly a 20 year swell. Yesterday we spent at a private beach north of San Pancho and it was incredible. The waves must have been 2.5 meters and just crashing all at once- completely unsurfable (imho) but VERY dramatic. It was a friend of Astrid's b-day and the kids were out in the wash and beyond them by about 50 yards these enormous crashing giants were sending huge walls of whitewater rushing at them.
I was upset by the news that nytimes will be charging for content upcoming and spent the morning trying to figure out where to get my news from. I have been following the democrat's debacle and wondering what the hell will happen now with health care reform. I wondered how it would impact us down here- would we have to pay for health care we can't utilize? Anyway it seems like it will change after the MA elections- I think it is all entirely corrupt but whatever. Money pays. As for a new news service I found bbc too bubbly in it's online layout, cnn seemed too derived from it's tv roots. I guess that is why I love the nytimes, it reads like a newspaper. I suppose the washington post is a good alternative once the nytimes goes fee based.
I watch the goings on in my country of birth much like I hear of the goings on at companies for which I used to work. I think the institutions are flawed but care about the people who live under them. I wonder about the law of survival of the fittest as applied to corporations and institutions created by humans but then morphing into something that must sustain the machinations at the expense of those who created them. I guess it is a lesson I have to relearn that at a certain size an organism is infiltrated with bodies that care only of self preservation and the pioneer genetics get ousted. The "maintaining" phase looks pretty desperate. It applies to the democrats who aren't concerned with what's best but only with near term elections. Their argument could be that if they didn't focus on the upcoming elections they wouldn't be able to effect any change going forward. I loved learning about the supreme court justices who veered after their nomination success because they were no longer constrained by politics.
Today going to a beach, hopefully with some surfable surf. I will try to not get any sun as Friday I got toasted being out for 4+ hours in the water. What a glorious day in the water! It kinda worked me over for an entire day but you gotta make hay while the sun shines- I hope we keep getting the consistent swells like we have... SO damn lucky.

Try something new
Hola adoring fan(s).
I have been meaning to update my other blog but have not for a couple reasons. It is on my .mac account and I plan to let that die- I never use any of the .mac stuff excepting my email and I have already gone ahead and set the gmail as the dominant account for all outgoing. Plus I added my email address in my signature just to reinforce that the gmail is the one to use. I hated the template for the .mac blog, I got very frustrated with how it was handling photo integration too.
What was the other reason? I just didn't have alot to say. I read a bunch of the blogs I read while treading water waiting to move down here that allowed me a taste of the life I thought I'd have once I moved. They were all about the wonders of life in mexico, how this was different, how that was different. For a long time I found this pretty neat and also incorporated those very same things into my blog but now after a whopping almost 1.5 years the little things don't register as different they just are. So that's why.
I enjoy writing. I am not entertaining thoughts about writing a novel anytime soon. I don't know that I have the gumption to focus that long and then have someone critique. I would love for my mom to write her story but understand the reasons she isn't writing it yet. They are probably the same reasons I am not writing- where does the time go???
I have been doing a goodly amount of designerly stuff. I haven't really publicized because I felt like an impostor. santosa-retreat SFT Tequila Bar Hotel Hafa
But I guess not?
