Christmas eve randomness

I am sitting in a house in Mexico waiting. They should be here any minute, then out to the Christmas tree walk through our little neighborhood. Astrid has a new puppy and treva has a new tattoo. I almost succumbed to a new iPhone but was unable to fully convince myself of the need. Not sure if a better screen and 2 cameras is worth it. Maybe wait for the next up.

The surf has been really mellow in comparison to last year's mayhem. Fixing up a new-to-me board for the bigger waves that must be just around the corner.

All's well in Sayulita, here's hoping that you all find what you are looking for the next few days, and that Santa can figure out how to deal without a chimney.

Stuff & junk

I have a weird quirk where I want to start everything off with "so." Every post, every sentence, every story. Not sure the cause or the tic but there it is for all of the tens of you who read this. If you see me doing the so thing, shut me down.

Life has been fairly interesting of late. Lots of peaks and valleys. I am reading a great book about aussie surf kid life, "Breath." My buddy Justin leant it to me and I am quite enjoying the discussion of surfing and the little things that it represents for the character. He speaks of the time without surf and the way the mind seeks out other ways to fulfill the rush that one receives when you are able to ride a particularly horrifying slab. We had some through the other week and I gotta say there is nothing that compares to the the thrill of the jet engine roaring right on your tail as you try to carve out some turns and stay right in the spot. Also, nothing quite like the disappointment when your small animal brain prevents you from taking off at the peak of what could have been the best wave of the day simply because you are afraid of a little reef rock at the bottom of the wall that would most certainly have pummeled you. Or the realization that the pummeling is actually okay and you didn't drown and you have another chance to do it all over. The video of the rats hitting the lever replays over and over.

The thing is, I have had nothing else that strips out all the cross talk in my brain so effectively, so completely. Running gave me hints but it was more escaping into a zone where I could turn off. Surfing is more than that, the fear and elation combine to create something wholly different- a new (to me) space where it is only the now. Holy Castenada, that sounds lame on the reread but it is what it is. So times up...

No title

Life has been moving at a somewhat more rapid pace recently. I've been getting a new property up to snuff for the season and there always seems to be a new task to get done. Everything takes a couple of different moving pieces to all coordinate at the same time and then something will change the next 6 steps. But what the hell, it isn't brain surgery.

The real issue is the lack of surf. Ugh, it is easier to get through the little things when I have the taste of saltwater, pretty amazing to find a passion that exemplifies all the aspects I really never knew I possessed. I had the chance to watch a professional surf the other day at my local break and it was cool how effortless it looked for her. In my mind the pop up feels like climbing a ladder, a multistep process. Pro's have a bit more grace but I'd like to see how good they'd be if they started at 40. Really though, amazing to watch. My buddies and I all had a good time in the water, saw the most amazing sunset and then met the family for an overpriced but free dinner. Not too shabby for a Wednesday.

Beachy post

Just another blue blue sky day. Living in mexico in a beach town is different than my dreams of living in an oregon beach town, as I am reminded by Amy, our welcome guest from PDX. We were sitting downstairs in the shady newly painted living room discussing our friend Morgan who lives in Pacific City, OR. We talked of our visits to the beach towns of Netarts and Lincoln City. Reminiscing about being on the land side of the dunes and feeling the heat and then crossing over to the ocean side, how the wind would rip down the beach to freeze you no matter what preparations your tried to make. I think we need some more nautical or shell related knick knacks around the house. True, Treva’s jellyfish themed paintings do bring some beachiness to our house but I think we need some more.

5 minutes

Five minutes a day- that is the plan. I spend more time making coffee in the morning so I can do this. Set my timer and go. Okay- set.

Today is hurry up and wait. There are two trucks coming form walmart with something like 19 matrimonials and 5 individual mattresses for families here. I feel a certain guilt talking about the issues I have had with the procurement of these mattresses and the distribution thereof but really, holy cow. First you need the hope of getting money to pay for such an undertaking- thank god for Grupo Pro Sayulita. Then you need to go out and explain that there is the chance you can get new mattresses that were ruined in the flood. You get a list that you then need to double check against people who know who really lost what and who may be trying to ride the train to new mattress land. You wait for the money to come. You cash a huge check and then carry bundles of cash to Walmart to ask them to drop their prices and put up with hit or miss delivery. You arrange for TIME’S UP!!!

Chicken fights

How many times has this happened to you? I went downstairs because I thought I heard Astrid scurrying around but to my dismay it was k-ten with a good sized chicken caught by the neck. Fortunately I had the boxes from Mega shopping so I shooed the killer away and threw the box on top of the chicken. Scooping a handy cutting board under the box, I lifted chicken/box/cutting board and ran to the 2nd story whereupon I threw the chicken off to freedom of the abandoned lot next door.

K-ten is looking daggers at me, I shall not be praised in the cat world today.
